My Son’s First Laptop

kevins-first-laptopMy son will be graduating from high school this year, and the used laptop that I bought him for his eight grade graduation has endured. This used laptop had taken a lot of abuse from a typical teenage boy. I purchased it for around $375.00. After 4 years of it being dropped and mishandled by my son, I can say with conviction – it was worth every penny.

Yes, that Dell Inspiron 2650 has taken some abuse, and I never once had to repair or replace any parts. Granted there has been an occasion or two where one of the drivers got corrupted from my son going onto those websites that supposedly gives away free stuff. Be aware that those sites! They are only good for giving away free viruses and trojan spyware. When your laptop has accumulated enough spyware (or one bad one) it will slow down to a snails pace or totally corrupt your software.

So, for those with kids, make sure you get good virus software that will protect your laptop. I won’t say which virus software is the best, but I use a free software (with a built in firewall) that comes with my internet provider. The same software sells in retail stores.
Now its time to sell old faithful and purchase his college bound laptop/present. I will keep it until his graduation and then donate it to the goodwill and write it off for about ½ of what I bought it for.

For his graduation, I have not decided what kind of laptop to purchase. But, I am certain that it will be used or reconditioned laptop. Hopefully it will last him through his college years.
